Simple past tense




We use the simple past tense to talk about what happened at a definite time in the past.
There are some common expressions we use :
-      Yesterday
-      Last night
-      Last week
-      Testerday afternoon, etc
Reguler Verbs
·         Most verbs (+ed)
Ex : walk-> walked     play-> played
·         Verbs ending in e (+d)
Ex : live-> lived       use-> used
·         Verbs ending in a consonant +y
(-y + ied)-> exeption
Ex : cry -> carried       carry -> carried
·         Short verbs ending in a vowel +a consonant
(vowel : a, e, i, o, u) (double the consonant +ed)
Ex : stop -> stopped       shop -> shopped

Ireguler verbs
Ø  No change
Cost -> cost        put -> put
Ø  Change the vowel or the consonant
Come-> came     ring -> rang
Make -> made    sit -> sat
Drink -> drank   swim -> swam
Sing -> sang
Ø  Change the whole word
Buy -> brought      do -> did

Negative sentences

We add “ did not” before the main verb from negative sentence.
(did not = didn’t) example:
-      I did not see Sandy this morning
-      John did not go to Masjid last Sunday
-      David did not watch tv last night
-      Safira didn’t go to School

Interrogative sentence

We add “ did” before the subject and put a “?” at the end to form question.
Example :

Did you have breakfast this morning?
