MODAL (Auxiliary Verb)



1.  Can
it is for showing:
a.    The ability (kemampuan)
Example: - I can Speak English
-      He can run fast
b.    For showing the opportunity (kesempatan)
Example : - I have a lot assignment so I can’t go with you
-      She has some free time, I’m sure she can help you
c.    For showing the possibility/impossibility
Example : - Anyone can be smart if they study hard (possibility)
-      It can’t be rain because the sky is bright (impossibility)

2.  May
It is for showing:
a.    Possibility
Example : - She may be upset if you don’t tell her the truth
-      He may be sick, his face is looks pale
b.    Permission (izin)
Example : - May I go now?
-      You may leave the class now
c.    For showing request
Example : - May I borrow your book?
-      May he call you tonight?

3.  Should
It is for showing :
a.    Sugestion/advice
Example : - To get score, you should study hard
-      We should eat low fat food
b.    To showing an obligation (kewajiban)
Example : - You should be at school before 7 o’clock
-      As a good student, we should obey all school rules
c.    To showing probability
Example : - Sasqia should be in Korea 2 days later
-      He isn’t here, he should be in school the canteen

4.  Must
a.    To show conclusion (kesimpulan)
Example : - He must have a problem, he looks sad
-      There’s someone at library. She must be Miss. Laras
b.    To showing strong prohibition (larangan) or obligation
Example : - You must come to school on time

-      I must sturdy hard because I’m at third grade now
